Dear College I am contacting you because I believe that our Luton and Dunstable community computer network club (which is part of the nationwide Consume project) may be of interest to yourself and the college. The project is a non-commercial one to establish a high speed low cost computer wireless network for all households, amateur clubs, voluntary and other non-profit organisations in the area. A demonstration network is working in London. The Government Radiocommunications Agency are aware of the project (which is country-wide) and have not raised any objections to our use of free licence-exempt waveband (at 2.4GHz) (c.f. Citizens Band). A technical network summary, details of the local L&D Club formed to promote the network together with a map of the current "speculative" member nodes, can be found at: http://www.swimsite.dabsol.co.uk Full details, database of current nodes nationwide, etc. can be found at: http://www.consume.net Such a network could be of great benefit to the college by providing rapid access to the local community. Let me know if the college would be interested in participating as "speculative" members (with no commitment) just to see how it progresses. A node requires computer transceiver equipment, currently costing about £350, with a range of between 1Km and 2Km and speed of 11Mbps (80 to 100 times faster than a 56k modem). Running costs can be virtually nil (i.e. electricity). A node is capable of serving many users. At this stage we are only trying to estimate interest and map likely location of nodes to confirm connectivity (see map on website). If you have any questions, check the website(s) or failing that, I would be happy to answer them. From Paul Clarke (Local Club co-ordinator) swimsite@freeuk.com
